Congratulations to Jane Lawrence and Pete Myers from Northern Rail for picking up two awards at Friday’s Institute of Internal Communication Excellence Awards. They won the category for ‘reward and recognition communication’ for Northern Stars and a Gold Award for overall strategy. We are very proud of you both!
Two of Sarah’s friends achieved incredible things recently, and by doing so raised loads of money for charities that are close to their hearts. Julie trained hard for the 26-mile London Marathon and Brian’s preparation for the 19,000-feet climb of Mount Kilimanjaro was nothing short of outstanding!
What spurred both of them on was having a clear goal… as the going got tough they kept focused on that goal and managed to overcome the challenges along the way. This was described wonderfully by Brian:
At about 18,500 feet I began to feel decidedly faint and unbalanced. I kept thinking of all the people who had provided me with so much support. I then thought of all my friends at the Sports Centre for the Disabled in Ramat Gan: each one of those disabled sportsmen have to face a Kilimanjaro every day of their life.
How clear are your goals? Are they spurring you on to achieving your own triumphs? If not, it may be worth revisiting them!
We’re really chuffed Northern Rail was announced as Train Operator of the Year 2010 at the annual Rail Business Awards last night.

David had a fantastic time at this year’s VMA Internal Communication Showcase held in London last week:
“Can’t tell you how proud I was to stand up with Jane Lawrence and present Northern Rail’s achievements at the recent VMA Internal Communication Showcase. Thanks to Jane and Julia for letting me ‘be Northern’ for the night, to VMA for hosting such a brilliant event and to Lance for sitting on and breaking the trophy we won as he got into the cab. Nothing that a spot of glue won’t fix and a very funny moment to end a brilliant day!”

Heidi is Managing Director at Northern Rail (who you’ll know from our case studies we’ve done some fantastic work with recently), so we’re absolutely chuffed to bits for her…
One of our clients, Northern Rail, recently won a prestigious award with a little bit of help from Rambutan!
They won the ‘most effective use of internal communications’ category at the HR Excellence Awards 2009. The judges said: “In a particularly strong category, Northern Rail stood out for its comprehensive, practical and multi-dimensional approach to internal communications”, and since we’ve been working closely with Northern Rail for quite some time in this area we’re pretty pleased!
We’ll share more details about the measurable difference that internal communication is making at Northern when our full website’s up and running, but just to give you a taste: in their employee survey in 2006 the score for the question ‘I am kept up to date with regular news / information relating to our business’ was at 59% and with a clear strategy and lots of hard work this went up to 82%!
Well done to Jo, Jane, Richard and Heidi and everyone else at Northern whose determination to refresh the way people communicate is achieving great results. We love working with you!
